American Sewing Guild National Conference A record crowd, tons of new patterns, and fantastic classes made this year's ASG gathering a resounding success The American Sewing Guild's annual Conference, held July 17-22, 2002, in Philadelphia, was a resounding success, by all accounts. Over 700 registrants were joined by 500 walk-in visitors to make it the largest-ever ASG gathering. Tools, textiles, and teachers The 44 exhibitors filled over 60 booths for the exhibit portion of the conference, with everyone reporting excellent sales and eager shoppers, and 35 teachers kept registrants busy in packed classrooms. Among the most popular offerings were "Organizing Your Sewing Space" by Anna Mazur, "Sewing Fun for Kids" by Kathleen Embry, "Quick Gifts" by Sue Hausmann, and "Simply Bags!" by Linda McGehee. Each of these classes was attended by over 100 participants.
When we weren't at our own booth, the Threads staff pored over the offerings in other booths, and we've assembled a Slideshow of all the new sewing patterns introduced at the show. We also canvassed the pattern-fitting software folks for any news that would affect our upcoming reviews, and met several potential authors. Our favorite find Directly opposite our booth, however, was our favorite new find: the Textile Workshop, the brain-child of three creative Philadelphia-area women whose hand-painted, dyed, and discharged silks and velvets were impossible to resist. You can stop by the Textile Workshop at 619 W. Washington St., Norristown, PA 19401 or visit their Web site at www.thetextileworkshop.com.
Make plans for 2003 Next year's conference will be July 30-August 4, 2003, in Portland, Oregon; in response to many requests, there will be more, and longer, hands-on classes. Check www.asg.org for more information.
