Threads Design Challenge VI

Lois Ericson, Nancy Shriber, and Mac Berg rise to the challenge: a Scrabble-themed transformable outfit in yellow, blue, and brown!

by the Threads editors

Designers Mac Berg, Lois Ericson, and Nancy Shriber (left to right) accepted our sixth challenge: to create a convertible ensemble and accessories for a fictional Scrabble-themed scenario to take place in the capital of couture, Paris.
What is it about a design challenge that we enjoy so much? In this, the sixth year of Threads' Design Challenge, it's more fun than ever to watch the designers work out the puzzle of what to design and sew for a fictional series of events. This time we're sending them to Paris for a gala celebrating the anniversary of the board game Scrabble. Our three challenge-takers share insights for sewers of all levels, including how to think creatively, overcome obstacles, correct mistakes, and stay in the game.

The rules of the game...
"Our theme is letters, words, and wordplay, so get ready to have fun," we wrote to the three participants who agreed to join our challenge. "Use your initials in unusual ways -- no typical monograms -- as you meet the criteria of the following fictional scenario:

"The International Scrabble Association is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the word game. Because you're a third cousin of Alfred Mosher Butts, the game's inventor, you're invited to the gala celebration in Paris. Cousin Alfred knows of your reputation as a designer with great sewing skills and sense of whimsy and imagination in solving a wardrobe puzzle. He looks forward to seeing just how creative you can be with his game.

"You'll need to design a daytime business outfit, including a hat and bag, which, needless to say, will be closely studied by all those Scrabble aficionados, curious to see how you've worked letters and words into your ensemble. After lunch, you'll spend the afternoon on a personal tour of the workrooms at Chanel. (Coco Chanel is famous for using her initials, by the way.) In order to stay as long as possible at Chanel, you decide to design your outfit for the evening cocktail event so that it's contained within your daytime outfit; any extra pieces must be self-stored in handbags, pockets, hats, etc. This way, if you run late, you can change your outfit on the Paris Metro in a subway car."

...and the resulting garments
We asked Lois Ericson, Mac Berg, and Nancy Shriber to design in their signature styles, to use lots of words and letters, and to keep a journal recording their creative process. Each designer chose one additional fabric to use and received $35 for notions, trims, or aspirin.

Mac Berg, Lois Ericson, and Nancy Shriber modeled their clothes last fall at the Original Sewing and Quilt Expo in Minneapolis; you can see them at three Expo locations this October. Look for Threads in Minneapolis this year, November 14-16, where we'll be hosting Design Challenge VII. For more details on the Expo, visit www.sewingexpo.com, or call 800-699-6309.
