Try Your Hand at Tassels

Simple or ornate, tassels are a brilliant way to add spice to garments and home décor

Tassels are like dancers that add dazzle anytime they appear. Store-bought tassels can cost as much as $300 and more, but, with some handy tools, you can make your own. Below, you'll find instructions for making a basic tassel from purchased fringe and cord. And, in the current issue of Threads (February/March 2002, #99), artist Sarah Oliver shares eight tools to help you make glamorous tassels fit for a queen, from cord to finished tassel.

Tassels from purchased fringe and cord
  1. Tie knot in cord.
  2. Wrap fringe tightly around base of knot. Sew, glue, or tie fringe securely in place.
  3. Turn fringe upside down over knot to cover it.
  4. Tie or wrap neck with thread and bury thread ends.
  5. Embellish if desired.
