CHOOSING AND USING NOTIONS TIP
Use a Whetstone to Smooth Machine Needles

I was without extra needles and had to continue sewing when a needle burr started catching in my fabric and making my machine noisy. I tried using a whetstone (usually designated for sharpening kitchen knives) to remove the burr -- it worked beautifully. Afterward my fabric didn't catch on the needle and the machine ran quietly. With this discovery I plan to regularly extend the life of my needles.
