Neat Seams without Backstitching
Sewing instructors often recommend backstitching to begin and end machine-sewn seams, but this method is much neater. Begin and end seams using short machine stitches -- such as 18 to 20 stitches per inch. Do this by either changing the stitch length on your machine for the first and last 1/2 inch of sewing, or by holding the fabric tightly in front of the needle for the first 5 stitches, so the feed dogs can't pull the fabric while it sews. Using this method produces a much smoother seam than backstitching allows.
