What fun it is to live in an age of embellishment. Everywhere you look -- in department stores, boutiques, catalogs, fashion magazines and on the street -- you can find beads and sequins, tassels and fringes, bright metallic studs, ribbons and braids, and embroidery both elegant and witty. Casual garb, party clothes, office attire -- all manner of garments seem to be trimmed out in styles reminiscent of many historic periods, with diverse ethnic inspirations.

In Connie Long's new book, Embellish Chic, Connie provides step-by-step instructions for traditional and contemporary embellishment techniques you can use to personalize and enhance plain, ready-to-wear garments. In this excerpt, Connie describes some unconventional uses for zipper teeth, grommets, and eyelets.

Easy-to-find metal embellishments such as zippers, grommets, and nail heads are fun to use because the results can be so varied. Although these embellishments are typically associated with biker-chick and punk accessories, you can also use metal accents to make basic garments more individual and to counterbalance soft-and-sweet or ladylike garments with an urban edge.

Connie Long is the author of three other books from The Taunton Press: Easy Guide to Sewing Blouses, Easy Guide to Sewing Linings, and Sewing with Knits. She teaches at G Street Fabrics in Maryland and is a frequent contributor to Threads magazine.
