It's been a month since the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School. The children are back to school, the news vans have all but gone away, the visitors' makeshift memorials have been picked up and stored in a warehouse, and much of the mail has been opened and put on display in the Municipal Center. We're back to normal, but not really.
One thing that has forever changed in this town is the community's commitment to make something positive, something meaningful be the result of this tragedy…to honor those we lost, to help the community move forward.
As one of the largest employers in Newtown, The Taunton Press and its founders, the Roman family, have long been supporters of education, family services, town volunteer services, youth sports, and the arts in our community.
In the wake of this tragedy, we are doing more. We have established a donor-advised fund with the Fairfield County Community Foundation* with the clear purpose of supporting the ongoing needs of the Newtown community.
The fund is called "The Taunton Press Newtown Children and Families Fund." It is, in part, a memorial to the victims; it is also an affirmation of the importance of families in Newtown and the surrounding area. Here is our mission and focus:
The Taunton Press Newtown Children and Families Fund
We work collaboratively with service providers, schools, government agencies and other organizations…to help ensure the health, well-being and safety of children and families in the Newtown area.
We will support programs and direct services provided by entities responding to well-documented needs to these areas:
We also seek to build public awareness of and to encourage policy change in areas that would support the building of strong families and communities.
We are particularly interested in funding strategies that address the needs of children and families, focusing on those that encourage collaboration, prevention, and strong leadership.
The Roman family and The Taunton Press have made gifts to establish this fund. The fund will have an advisory committee that will consist of family, company, and community representatives, who will direct support where it will have the most lasting impact.
If you would like to join us and help make a positive change for the Newtown community, we ask you to consider donating to our fund. We promise to support the Newtown community, specifically the children and families, well into the future.
