Design Confidently, Live Comfortably
| January/February 2005 Find Your Eclectic Style A Craftsman Mixes Worldly Styles Vintage furniture and Asian influences complement a Craftsman home. Working with a Craftsman-style house, with its characteristic built-ins and lots of wood trim, I mixed Japanese styles with Danish modern furniture. Craftsman homes were influenced by Japanese design, and they in turn influenced furniture designers of the 1940s and ’50s. All of those connections are rekindled in this home. ![]() A built-in Craftsman sideboard influenced the furniture choices in the dining room. A Robsjohn-Gibbings dining table and chairs blend well with the bamboo floor mat. Green wallpaper picks up light from the stained-glass window and the antique silk Fortuny lighting fixtures. ![]() The Batchelder tile fireplace and Craftsman architecture influenced the mix of Japanese and 20th-century styles chosen for the living room. We replaced overstuffed furniture with smaller-scale Danish modern furniture that has an organic feel and simple shapes. Woven window shades and a coffee table made from a Japanese door add Asian accents. Bursts of color come from Clarice Cliff pottery, and a brightly patterned orange Frank Lloyd Wright rug from the Arizona Biltmore Hotel livens up the room.
