A Colonial Becomes Exotic
Color, a mix of furnishings, and quirky accents make every room in this house one of a kind.

A colonial revival home, remodeled and expanded, needed some zing to change its personality from stodgy to exotic. We painted every room, reupholstered existing furniture, found vintage and antique furnishings, and added playful pillows to create different moods in each room. The result includes a sophisticated dining room (photo, Introduction), exotic living room, lively family room, and soothing master bedroom.

Paint and fabric transformed the living room and gave it an exotic Byzantine feel. The screen behind the turned-wood chair is Moroccan, the brass globe lamp is vintage 1960s, and the ceramics are early California pottery collected by the homeowner. For the fireplace, these colorful antique tiles were perfect, but there were only a few matching patterns. So I created a kind of patchwork quilt using complementary tiles.

The antique table’s color pops against the gold wallpaper, and the French 1940s wrought-iron mirror has just the right decorative quality. A Paul Frankl table lamp is the perfect mediator between the two pieces.

A magnificent Persian rug with a rare color palette of olive green, turquoise, and reddish mauve inspired this master bedroom suite. We chose soft, sensual fabrics to make the room feel comfortable, rich, and romantic. Upholstery and window coverings complement the colors of the rug. A bit of Asian styling is evident in the curves of the side tables.

Wall color was the starting point in the family room. The homeowners wanted turquoise, so we chose bold colors for the furnishings to work with the bright walls. I had a striped area rug custom made using all the accent colors. The new Holly Hunt sofa with its 1940s styling goes well with the home- owners’ coffee table and the vintage Paul Laszlo end tables.
