Design Confidently, Live Comfortably

Before you begin, ask yourself what’s driving the combination. Is it your passion for a particular pattern? If so, buy a yard -- or even a half or a quarter yard -- and spend some time with it. I like to pin it up so I can look at it from different angles, in different lights, at different times of the day. I let the favorite fabric inspire me and gradually add other patterns to the mix, always building on the original color palette.

To find wonderful patterns, visit fabric shops, home furnishing stores, and designer showrooms. Peruse magazines to create a file of your own. Many manufacturers take the guess work out of mixing patterns by selling fabrics in coordinating colors and textures. The fact is that they want you to buy the next fabric, and the next one, and the one after that. If you don’t see what you’re looking for, ask.
