New Outdoor Glue

Outdoor Wood Worx has good working qualities and sands easily

by Mark Schofield

Outdoor Wood Worx

The flat side and offset spout on the bottle allows the glue to flow, even if only a little is left.
Loctite Products has released an outdoor version of their Wood Worx adhesive that was reviewed in the January/February 2003 issue of Fine Woodworking (#161, p. 34). Like the original indoor adhesive, Outdoor Wood Worx is a PVA adhesive and comes in a similar plastic bottle with a flat side. This enables the bottle to rest on its side allowing the adhesive to be readily available even if the bottle is nearly empty.

This new version exceeds standards for the type II test for water resistance as long as the joint is protected by an exterior coating and is not exposed to water for five days. The adhesive requires clamping for one hour, it dries translucent, clean up is with warm water, and any residue sands easily.

12-sided column

The finished column.
When a sample bottle arrived at the magazine, I was halfway through constructing a twelve-sided column using sections of medium density overlay (MDO) joined with splines. I had been using a polyurethane adhesive but was tired of chiseling away foamed residue that had even come through voids in the MDO core.

I found the Outdoor Wood Worx much easier to work with: the viscosity meant the glue didn't run down the grooves for the splines but still squeezed easily from the bottle; the minimal squeeze out was easy to clean up. I can't vouch for the comparative strength of the two glues, but I know which I'll reach for the next time I have an outdoor project.
