Sources for Hearing Protection Gear

Where to get these devices, in quantities large or small

by William Duckworth

In the November/December 2001 issue of Fine Woodworking (#152), we published an article about protecting your hearing that looked at the various types of muffs and plugs on the market. Sources for these products abound. If you want to buy large quantities, such as disposable plugs by the hundred or muffs by the dozen, you might want to try either www.mscdirect.com (800-645-7270) or www.grainger.com (check your local phone book for the phone number of a Grainger branch store near you).

To buy smaller quantities, any number of woodworking supply catalogs offer choices of hearing protection devices, including the following: Garrett Wade (800-221-2942), Lee Valley (800-871-8158), Rockler (800-233-9359), Woodcraft (800-225-153) and Woodworker's Supply (800-645-9292). You may also be able to find ample choices in your local hardware and home-improvement stores. You could also call either one of two large manufacturers listed in a sidebar in the article: Howard Leight Industries (800-327-1110) or Peltor (made by Aearo, 800-225-9038) for a list of distributors near you.

William Duckworth is an associate editor of Fine Woodworking. For more on hearing protection, see his article "Protect Your Hearing in the Shop" in the November/December 2001 issue of Fine Woodworking.
