Makita's 3-in. by 21-in. belt sander has a transverse motor and very good sanding capability. It features automatic belt tracking, and the belt on the model tested spun perfectly right out of the box. The lever that releases the front roller to allow for changing belts is smooth and easy to use, and the sander itself is easy to control.
A sanding frame is available separately from the manufacturer for about $85.
