Nothing tells the story of a home-improvement project like a pair of before-and-after photographs. The most effective ones show some remnants of the old house -- maybe a window or a built-in cabinet -- alive and well in a new setting that has made the house more livable. Comparisons like these get our creative juices flowing, and I’m pleased to present several in this issue of Kitchens & Baths. Take a look at “A Kitchen Sees the Light” for a great example of how some new windows and an arched pass-through transformed a cramped little house into a modern home with a spacious feel. Or check out “A Hard-Working Bungalow Kitchen” to see how an addition of a mere 44 sq. ft. gave a remodeled kitchen a built-in breakfast nook and a highly organized baking center that encourages Sunday-morning waffle making. In addition to these and other real-world projects, our latest edition of Kitchens & Baths brings you an extensive survey of kitchen faucets and a review of bathroom ventilation equipment that will prevent mold and mildew with whisper-quiet fans and smart switches. And if you want to pitch in and do some of the work yourself, professional painter Brian Doherty offers advice on painting kitchens and baths, and veteran tile setter Tom Meehan presents detailed instructions on how to tile a backsplash. There's a lot more to the issue than those highlights, from Fixtures & Materials to Great Ideas and a whole new department called Design Gallery, which showcases a broad range of inspiring projects submitted by our readers.
