Before joining the Fine Homebuilding staff, assistant editor John Ross owned his own finish-carpentry business. He originally became interested in the trades over 20 years ago when his uncle taught him how to lash things together with baling wire on the family dairy farm. John has a degree in writing, literature, and publishing, and lives with his wife and two daughters in Sandy Hook, Conn.
