The genus Pentas contains a few dozen species of perennials, biennials, and shrubs from Arabia, Africa, and Madagascar, most of which are evergreen. They are grown for their showy domes of starry flowers and are good choices for beds, borders, containers, or greenhouses.
Noteworthy characteristics: Good cut flowers. Attracts butterflies and hummingbirds.
Care: In the garden, choose a site in full sun with fertile, well-drained soil. Indoors, grow in bright filtered light.
Propagation: In spring, sow seed at 61° to 64°F. Softwood cuttings can be taken year-round.
Problems: Aphids and spider mites can sometimes cause problems in the garden, and whiteflies can be troublesome indoors.
