Bear's breeches usually wows us with it jagged leaves, but it now also boasts striking white margins and mottling. In late summer, the leaves of 'Tasmanian Angel' are joined by 3-foot-tall, pink-and-cream flower stalks. As the leaves age, the variegation is said to diminish, but it still makes a great multiseason container specimen or a fantastic bedding plant.
 Noteworthy characteristics: This is the first variegated bear's breeches.
 Care: Provide partial to full shade and fertile, moist, well-drained soil.
 Problems: Nothing serious, but watch for slugs and snails.

This upright, evergreen shrub has stunning texture and form. Black mondo grass has straplike, shiny black foliage and grows in adorable little tufts. The newer leaves start out with a greenish hue but soon age to black. The flowers are bell shaped and can be pink, pale violet, or white, and they give way to fleshy black seeds that often remain on the plant throughout the winter. This perennial spreads slowly through underground stolons and is extraordinary when paired with chartreuse foliage. It is great in a shady container planting.
