Not Your Average Mums
These workhorse perennials perform year after year
by Bobbie Schwartz

Come fall, every garden center is flooded with heavily pinched, tightly mounded pot mums. These plants produce late-season color and are grown as annuals because of their delicate dispositions and maintenance requirements. There are, however, more cold-hardy mums that require little care. In this article, garden designer and plantswoman Bobbie Schwartz shares her favorite hardy garden mums with free-form, natural habits. She divides her discussion into three categories (short, medium, and tall) and recommends planting companions for these fall-blooming workhorses.
