Make a creative difference with these four design tips

Flower-box plantings beneath a window or along a porch or deck railing exude charm and extend a gardener's options for planting in containers. Garden designer Gary Keim of Lansdowne, Pennsylvania, has designed plantings for flower boxes for many years. In this article, Gary explains how to create flower-box plantings that decorate a house or deck with flair. Using several examples of his flower-box designs, he describes specific planting design strategies, such as ways to repeat plants within a single box or sets of boxes. You'll also learn how to use flower boxes in places other than below a window.
