Reap the Rewards of Self-Sowers
These four techniques help you manage botanical freebies to your advantage
by Meghan Ray

One of the most rewarding aspects of gardening is growing plants from seed. Unfortunately, many gardeners don't have the space or time to start seedlings in trays indoors. Many plants, however, happily seed themselves in the garden with no greater encouragement than allowing flowers to ripen and set seed. In this article, Meghan Ray, a gardening educator and curator at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, explains how to take advantage of self-sowers in the garden. She provides a list of her favorite self-sowing plants and describes the techniques she uses to perpetuate and manage these botanical freebies.
