Learn how to reduce a plant's bulk and reveal the beauty underneath by Cass Turnbull Cass Turnbull, of Seattle, Washington, founded PlantAmnesty, an organization dedicated to teaching people how to prune large shrubs correctly. One common mistake she sees people making is to start to prune from the outside or the top of the shrub. In this article, Turnbull explains her technique for pruning from the inside out and from the bottom to the top. Pruning in this way yields a shrub that is healthier and visually more appealing. She also provide a list of shrubs suited to this approach, such as rhododendron, andromeda, yew, camellia, magnolia, and cotoneaster. An illustration depicts several different kinds of pruning cuts.
