Add charm to your garden by giving your climbers a pillar to grow on
by John Starnes

A profusion of climbing roses in bloom conjures more than just romantic charm. It can add the sense of "wow!" to any garden. To ensure that climbing roses create a pleasing effect, it's essential to have the right kind of support for them to grow on. Pillars are a simple type of structure on which to train climbing roses. In this article, John Starnes, a rosarian from Tampa, Florida, provides guidelines for what makes a good pillar and instruction on how to train roses to grow on one. A sidebar lists some of the best climbing roses for warm and cool climates.
