More Compost, Less Work
Here's a space-saving setup that eliminates the need for turning
by Fred Pappalardo

While the many benefits of using compost in the garden are well known, the constant maintenance and backbreaking turning required by most compost piles can be what keep a gardener from composting altogether. Fred Pappalardo of Provincetown, Massachusetts, a compost aficionado, explains how he modified a basic, town-issued, plastic compost bin and developed a unique, space-saving compost system. Pappalardo's design raises the compost bin up onto a wooden platform and allows for increased aeration to the compost. This speeds up the decomposition process and alleviates the need for constant turning. In the article, Pappalardo explains how he developed his current system, how it works, and how readers can easily build their own.
