Designing with Grasses
Their presence allows them to be used like shrubs
by Christine Froehlich

Christine Froehlich has designed, built, and maintained gardens for more than 20 years. She recently has expanded her thinking on the use of ornamental grasses. Grasses are low maintenance, look great in the fall when most perennials are spent, and add dynamic texture, movement, and sound to a space. Why not use more of them? In this article, Froehlich, of New York, describes some of the unconventional ways she designs with grasses in a garden, using them as hedges, mass plantings, and edgings. For each purpose, she offers a list of favorites.
