Designing with Dwarf Conifers
Enjoy year-round interest without giving up your whole garden
by Melinda Myers

Melinda Myers, a Milwaukee horticulturist and host of a PBS television show on Midwest gardening, believes that planting dwarf conifers in borders and other garden settings is one of the best ways to give a garden year-round interest. In this article, she talks about how to use these slow-growing conifers to achieve specific design effects: as anchors in seasonally changing planting vignettes, as vertical accents, and in clusters with other conifers. Her recommendations for outstanding dwarf conifers include dwarf spruces, pines, arborvitae, hemlocks, cypress, and junipers. Dwarf conifers are valuable plants whether you have a tiny yard or a large landscape.
