AUDIO SLIDESHOW: Avant Garden

Subtle clues throughout this El Paso property make a Mexican wall garden seem right at home

Anne Davis might have made walls a part of her El Paso garden much sooner if she had known how much they could influence her landscape. A proper English girl growing up just outside of London, she was crazy about plants but didn't have any formal notions about design. It was more than 20 years before her gardening skills evolved into making spaces. She began with hedges, then built her first wall. Her adventure in making walls has culminated in a garden set within a garden, as the larger landscape sets the stage for a truly extraordinary space to fit right in.

The Mexican Wall Garden is the brainchild of landscape architect Martha Schwartz. In this slideshow, Martha talks about the inspirations for her design and what she thinks makes it a special space.
